Arnaud is a teacher of schools abroad. He reveals his 5 tips for going abroad to teach.
After 3 years teaching in France in Péronne (Somme), Arnaud decided to go to class ... in Tunisia! We asked him all our questions. Arnaud's class in Tunisia Arnaud's class in Tunisia On the way to French education abroad. You come ? 1 - Being a teacher of schools abroad Beneylu Pssst: Arnaud, tell us about your life as a teacher in schools abroad. Arnaud: Today, I teach French students abroad and some Tunisian students whose parents have chosen the French education system. My class is a real melting pot ! The students want to learn, it's nice! We follow the French curriculum, to which we add 2 hours of teaching the language of the country. In my case it's Arabic, taught by another teacher (my students speak Arabic better than me!). 2 - The contracts of French teachers abroad BP: How does one become a French teacher abroad? Arnaud: You have to teach at least 3 years in France before you can apply for a position abroad. We build files to be able to leave. The movements appear in the BO for French schools. Two agencies mainly manage the contracts: AEFE (the Agency for French Education Abroad: http://www.aefe.fr ). AEFE is a national public institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs . In these establishments, you can be seconded either as an expatriate or as a resident or in a local contract. MLF (French Secular Mission: http://www.mlfmonde.org ). The French Secular Mission creates and manages schools, colleges and high schools around the world. The purpose of this association is to spread French language and culture through schooling abroad. The contracts of French teachers abroad We can choose from 3 types of contracts : Expatriate employment Employment as a resident Employment as a local recruiter 1) The expatriate contract is endangered. It offers a lot of advantages (we are paid almost twice as much as in France, we can have help for the move ...). It is less common today because it is expensive. We can nowadays have this status if we are a director, trainer or educational advisor, for example. It is necessary : hold the Ministry of National Education justify at least 3 years of effective service in the position as a holder. The secondment is for a period of 3 years , renewable once. 2) The resident contract is the most extensive. We get the French salary and a removal bonus. It is necessary : hold the Ministry of National Education justify at least 3 years of effective service in the position as a holder. The candidate is recruited on the proposal of the school head, after consulting the local joint consultative committee. 3) The contract of local law is less well paid. You have to pay attention to the cost of living abroad if you choose it. He proposes a local social security and one does not contribute for the French retirement. It's a private contract. It allows to recruit people who have a bac + 3 with a good level of French, who can learn on the job. This type of contract can also help a teacher who does not find a resident contract at the beginning because it is faster and easier to access. It is a gateway for 1 or 2 years, which can then be a priority on a resident position. Teachers recruited on a local contract by a school will be placed on availability. In general, for these 3 types of contracts, you have to hang on to get a job. It is sometimes postponed for several years to arrive there and the constitution of records can discourage more than one. For the AEFE, you have to write to each institution, or for some countries to a centralizing agency, so plan a certain budget to post your mail (imagine a 300 g mail for South Africa, another for a in Canberra, another for Sydney and you'll quickly understand that you need a little bit of money in addition to planning the delivery times). For the MLF everything is centralized by a registration on their website, it takes 21 euros for processing files. Do not wait until the last minute to build your file! You can now check out this year's lists of items to be provided. Generally, institutions ask for the same things so make a file transfer and save as PDF your inspection reports, your certificates of internship and your various degrees, it will save you a crazy time, you'll see. Be careful, some institutions ask for special documents and / or time-limited (criminal record of less than 3 months ...). We also always ask for a short, handwritten cover letter (less than one page) that you will have to scan for certain files as well. NB: The PDF format is required for documents to be sent to the MLF and for some AEFE institutions. It's quite fun to have family comet plans and look for information on Rio de Janeiro, Dakar or Shanghai before making a "top list". To know where to go, do not wait until the last minute! The sites of the AEFE and the MLF propose at any time maps and detailed lists of all the places where there are French schools abroad. After, it will be enough to see if a post is released the year you apply. 3 - The organisms BP: Should I choose AEFE or MLF? Arnaud: Both agencies are of quality. The French Lay Mission is practical when you are a teacher couple. It facilitates reconciliation by offering linked positions. The AEFE presents a larger panel of posts. 4 - Dates to apply BP: When do we apply? Arnaud: Remember 3 dates: Before December January March Registrations on the recruitment platform of the MLF are done in September. The posts are published as early as December in 27 AEFE countries: Algeria, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, Chile, China, Congo, Egypt, Spain, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Madagascar, Morocco, Portugal, Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Africa (DRC), United Kingdom, Senegal, Tunisia, Vietnam. There is a new wave of AEFE posts in January and you will finalize some MLF files by this date (attention registration on the MLF platform mandatory before December). The results fall in early March. You have 72 hours to accept (or refuse) the position. 5 - The moment to leave to teach abroad BP: Which teachers go abroad? Arnaud: Often, young teachers decide to leave. Each country chooses its recruitment criteria. A teacher who has rolled his hump is more expensive, it can be a drag. The ideal moment is between the 5th and the 7th level . The most points in the "step" category are usually awarded for a position abroad. Certain qualifications are appreciated and can bring back points in your files of candidacy: CAFIPEMF, BAFA , diploma of FLE (French Foreign Language), diploma (s) of foreign language, control of the computer tool, attestations of various and varied internships , certificate PSC1 (trainer first aid), ... Do not hesitate to train and recover / keep your certificates of internship.
